In the 1960's, Hank Hayes and Jim Nazium were next door neighbors in a housing project near Coney Island, NY. As their friendship grew, so did their passion for music and radio.
Jim found that by tinkering with a standard FM radio, he could transmit radio signal. With this discovery, two pirate radio legends were created and the course of pirate radio history was altered forever. In the mid-1970's, teenaged Hank and Jim grew discontent with the lack of original, locally-produced late-night radio offerings. Rising to meet a need, Hank and Jim began their pirate radio career with the broadcast of WCPR at the end of the AM dial; however, WCPR's short run ended in an Federal Communications Commission (FCC) bust. Shortly thereafter, pirate radio WFAT-AM was born. WFAT grew a loyal listener base over the next year until the FCC again honed in on Hank and Jim's location and closed down their operation.
The end of WFAT was only a temporary slow-down for Hank and Jim. In 1980, WHOT-FM signed on. Armed with jingles, high-personality banter and a Top-40/Oldies format, Hank and Jim would grow their loyal listener base over the next 7 years. During this time, Pete Sayek joined Hank and Jim. The trio continued to have run-ins with the FCC, but they were tenacious. When the FCC found them, they would dismantle operations and re-assemble at undisclosed locations ... always just outside the FCC's grasp. The summer of 1987 brought a new adventure that would give new meaning to the term "pirate radio". Hank, Jim and Pete collaborated with Allan Weiner, Ivan Jefferies and a few others to take their unlicensed radio antics to international waters as Radio NewYork International (RNI). The group obtained a Honduran-based fishing trawler and anchored in international waters off of Long Island, NY. The engineless vessel, dubbed "The Radioship Sarah", was fashioned with radio equipment and began broadcasting in July of 1987. Less than 5 days later, amid a media frenzy, the FCC boarded the Sarah, closed down operations and destroyed much of the equipment.
Fast forward twenty years ... Hank and Jim are still the best of friends. Although they no longer broadcast semi-legally with the FCC on their tail, they continue to chart new waters in radio history. Hank and Jim can now be found on the internet on stickam.com and in high speed stereo. The internet has given the duo a forum to reunite with old listeners and establish new fans. Often joining them are old pals Pete and Ivan, along with the humorous ramblings of Orson Welles, Howard Cosell and Casey Kasem. The chat room is always lively and full of friends, good times and music history. Hank and Jim Show Links: SPAZ out your stickam page with custom layouts for The Hank and Jim Show! |
